Models in science

No, we don't mean models of teeth.

Sometimes scientists want to do investigations but they can't use the real thing.

Imagine learning how to fly an aeroplane. It would be best to try and fly using a flight simulator before having a go with a real plane!

The flight simulator is an example of a 'scientific model.'

Crash test

A crash test dummy is a good example of a scientific model. Scientists could not crash the cars with real people inside them. Using the dummies allows scientists to test the cars without hurting anyone.

The dummies are injured in the crash so that scientists can make cars safer for real people.
